A Children Government is a representative body composed of children elected by other children to organize social, curricular and co- curricular activities and to participate in governing their school. It serves as the official voice of the children’s body and it encourages children to express their concerns and ideas. It therefore promotes an environment of open discourse and academic excellence and proactively represents the children’s voice to the school administration, board of management and the school community through ethical and accountable service.

The Children’s Government model is an indicator of the leadership and governance strategies of schools within the child friendly schools. The model replaces the prefecture system with a representative body composed of children elected by other children to organize social, curricular and co- curricular activities and to participate in governing their school. It serves as the official voice of the children’s body and it encourages children to express their concerns and ideas. It therefore promotes an environment of open discourse and academic excellence and proactively represents the children’s voice to the school administration, board of management and the school community through ethical and accountable service. The Children’s Government also provides an opportunity where best interest of children is a primary consideration. In addition the principle of “child opinion” which emphasizes that when working with children, it is important that they air their views and opinion on issues that affect them, respect their views and opinions and give them their due weight.
